California State Fair to Feature First Known Amusement Ride Powered Solely By Cows - MarketWatch

cfaf logoCalifornia State Fair to Feature First Known Amusement Ride Powered Solely By Cows
PG&E Cow Powered Ride Highlights Advances in Renewable Energy
Last update: 9:50 p.m. EDT Aug. 12, 2008SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug 12, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Move over horse power, cow power could be the next big thing! The California State Fair today announced that the event will host the first known amusement ride powered entirely by cow manure.Pacific Gas and Electric Company and developer BioEnergy Solutions will power a children's train ride with renewable biogas, made from California dairy cows. The ride, "Barnyard Animal Train," is owned by Ray Cammack Shows and will be located in the Kaiser Permanente Kids Park at the State Fair. Kids will have the opportunity to take a ride and learn more about renewable energy options for the future and about being environmentally conscious."Powering a children's ride at the state fair with biogas is a celebration of the great efforts of California's dairy farmers to help us meet our energy needs," said PG&E Vice President of Gas Transmission and Distribution Robert T. Howard. "We're proud to partner with these innovative dairy farmers and demonstrate the potential for the state's agriculture and power sectors to work together to meet California's climate goals."Biogas is gas produced by the anaerobic digestion or fermentation of organic material, such as cow manure, but may be made from any biodegradable waste. After purification, the gas produced (methane) is the same as the natural gas we use today. In addition to providing PG&E customers with a clean and renewable resource, biogas provides the dairy farmers in PG&E's service area with a new source of revenue and removes methane, a potentially hazardous greenhouse gas, from the air.Fairgoers can learn more about this source of green energy at the California State Fair. The exhibit and ride will be here in the Kaiser Permanente Kids Park starting Friday, Aug. 15 through Labor Day.

Miss. Senate Race Duked Out At County Fair : NPR

cfaf logo California fairs and festivals is not a political site, but if you're in Mississippi and attending a fair, politics will come to you. Check out this story from NPR:

"Longtime Republican Senate leader Trent Lott won re-election in landslide after landslide, but now the once-comfy seat in Mississippi is up for grabs. Republican Sen. Roger Wicker, appointed after Lott retired last year, faces former Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in what pundits are calling the Deep South contest of the year.
And that has brought the candidates to the summer political tradition of the year — the Neshoba County Fair. It's a 10-day tent revival meeting in the red clay hills near Philadelphia in east Mississippi — except that the tents are two- and three-story cabins, 600 of them, lined up beyond the carnival rides and cow barns."When you're at the Neshoba County Fair, you know you're in the heart and soul of Mississippi," says Wicker, 57, a lawyer, longtime congressman and former state senator..."

Santa Barbara Fair is on -- complete with rainforest

cfaf logo
From the Santa Maria Times: Livestock fills hundreds of stalls and pens at the Santa Barbara County Fair, but some more exotic animals seemed to be the center of attention Wednesday on the fair's opening day.Spectators gathered around the Rainforest Experience exhibit 30 minutes before the show started. Children were lined up against the fence, eagerly anticipating a chance to watch the showUnder the shade of a tent, a few of the animal stars could be seen in their cages. There was a ring-tailed lemur, a serval (a small African cat) a coatimundi (a small animal closely related to the lesser panda) and a capuchin monkey.

Friday Freebies and other notes

Friday Freebie is the time to give a shout-out to free festivals happening this week and today we say hey to the Fairfield Summerfest 2008. The event is June 7, 2008 from Saturday 10am to 4pm at the Armijo High School 824 Washington St Fairfield, CA...

This event is also free and is not listed on Californiafairsandfestivals.com but it should be: The SalmonAid Festival is taking place at Jack London Square in Oakland Saturday noon-7pm and Sunday 11am to 7pm. Sig Hansen, Captain of the F.V. Northwestern made famous in the Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" will be a guest speaker. Crab boats also fish for other species and the Hansen clan has been practicing their skills for generations, so Captain Hansen's views should be informative; and the event is for a worth cause.

Before you leave for the festival fun this weekend, check the air pressure in your tires. Under-inflated tires decrease fuel mileage and when purchasing new tires, keep in mind that not all tires provide the same fuel economy due to resistance and other factors only NASCAR engineers understand.

Have fun at the festivals!
